Always very funny to me when British slang obscures the original to them (see "quite"). "for the nonce" which in circa-1200 Middle English was written "for þe naness", is a warp of "for the once" in the opposite way "naranja" became "orange". Brit usage is dated 1975 and probably from "nancy".
