Beautiful photo of geologist David Johnston, age 30. He died one day later when Mount St. Helens blew, 45 years ago today. I remember as a boy I'd stare at pictures of Johnston, wondering about the daring and bravery of this grownup so much older than me. Now I think: "But he was so very young."
