Somewhat along those lines, I (vaguely) remember reading that the "golden age of ventilation" in the US was ca. 1900. Skyscrapers needed to be cooled but A/C didn't exist yet so architects designed for good ventilation. Post-A/C, buildings didn't rely on good ventilation so it faded away.
