The best place to answer this question is at the Royal Institution, where most major geophysicists discoursed, debated, and corresponded. In this workshop, we bring together leading scholars from history of science, and geophysics, and philosophy of science to explore how modern geophysics took shape in the nineteenth and twentieth century.\nAll talks are in the Conversation Room (see attached floorplan) unless otherwise specified.\nTalks are 25 minutes and 10 minutes Q&A\nLightning talks are 5 minutes, with a group 10 minute Q&A\nSchedule\n9:00 - 9:30am\nBreakfast and Registration\nConversation Room\n9:30 - 9:40am\nWelcome and Introduction\n9:40 - 10:50am\nSession 1\nAlisa Bokulich\nBoston University\nPablo Lima\nUniversity of Seville\nThe Philosophical Culture of the U.S. Coast Survey & the Rise of Geophysics: 1816-1874\nThe Making of Oceanography: Natural Models and Cross-scalar Reasoning in the Mediterranean Sea.\n10:50 - 11:10am\nCoffee Break\nMezzanine\n11:10am - 12:20pm\nKaty Duncan\nRoyal Institution\nGregory Good\nWest Virginia University\nSession 2\nInfluence and Instrument: The Fair Weather Problem in\nAtmospheric Electricity (1850-1930)\nThe Astronomical (and other) Backgrounds of Geophysics", "image": { "$type": "blob", "ref": { "$link": "bafkreidbf23hofkzf672an5mcl2o4fujsev3ugvtphcq6pllxcrfhfanwu" }, "mimeType": "image/jpeg", "size": 492685 }, "aspectRatio": { "width": 1179, "height": 1443 } } ] }, "langs": [ "en" ], "facets": [ { "index": { "byteEnd": 291, "byteStart": 287 }, "features": [ { "tag": "HPS", "$type": "app.bsky.richtext.facet#tag" } ] } ], "createdAt": "2025-04-08T12:52:59.993Z" } }
