        "alt": "I found this paper to have a number of interesting and even audacious results, demonstrating upconversion from the near infrared to the visible in a contact lens in both mice and people --  which is quite a bold experiment to perform. I liked the demonstration of trichromatic upconversion, where different near-infrared wavelengths mapped to different visible wavelengths, enabling a sort of “color vision” in the near infrared. \n\nWhile the authors were clear about this in the main text of the paper, I do want to clarify for anyone just reading the title that putting these upconversion contact lenses onto the eyes does NOT confer the ability to see in the infrared, because the upconversion process doesn’t preserve directionality. I think, if you were wearing these, all you would see is big blurs of upconverted light in your visual field. The authors did build a different optical system that enables actual upconversion vision, but it’s much bulkier than a contact lens, and also less novel.\n\nAlso, my understanding is that the near-infrared intensities used for the experiments are relatively high, and a lot more research would need to be done to enable upconversion vision at reasonable intensities for many applications. Still, it’s an impressive paper.\n",
