there's a whole thing about kitsch as a fundamental mode of revanchist American aesthetic that I think explains a LOT of this - you don't WANT the thing that looks actually classy, you want the gold-leafed plastic, because classy is for *other people*, probably across an ocean somewhere. or gay.
