For folks who don't know, ILM built a giant 6-foot Enterprise-D model (right) in the hopes that a huge model would be the most useful since you could get SUPER close to it and it would still be packed with detail - unfortunately, it was TOO big (both to carry/move & to film on tiny soundstages).
