Confirmandi (depending on the country/parish) select a saint’s name as a patron when they’re confirmed. In theory it’s an additional middle name, though I don’t know anyone who legally uses it as such. It’s not a universal practice even among Catholics, but pretty common in Anglophone Catholicism.
