#photography #tortoise We had a surprise clutch of Sulcata hatchlings a few years ago. These are some of them having lunch. See alt text for some information about sullies, and feel free to ask questions if you'd like to learn more.

"alt": "Hatchling sulcata tortoises from a few years ago. Sulcatas are very popular in the pet trade. They can easily live 50+ years in captivity and can grow to 200 pounds. This also leads to very high levels of abandonment and surrender. Most people cannot deal with a pet that large and turn them loose, or leave them behind when they move. We choose to not contribute more to the glut of sulcatas on the pet market, and instead destroy any clutches we find. I didn't catch my girl laying this one, so we had a few hatch.\n\nI very carefully vet people who are interested in adopting sullies, and have a long discussion with them about their needs and the lifetime commitment they demand. I also offer a \"no questions asked\" re-homing option in the event someone adopts one of our sullies and cannot care for it later. I've only ever had one come back in nearly 20 years.\n\nSullies are great low maintenance pets with easygoing personalities, but they take the right mindset and a decent size enclosure to inhabit. If you'd like to adopt one in your area, PLEASE do your research and fully understand what you are getting yourself into first. Check your local rescue agencies to see if they have abandoned torts before you buy from a pet store. Adopt, don't shop.",
