δ is the dirac delta function often used in physics to represent instantaneous change, where as δ(0) = ∞ and δ(x) = 0 everywhere else, such that integrating this function gives us by fiat a discrete unit “bump”, or a function H(x) (known as the heaviside step) that goes from 0 to 1 at x = 0:
