I'm on the PTA, which is like ten parents who regularly do things for the school. Last summer we asked the school teachers what supplies they needed for every student and then we purchased them and one amazing parent went through to put them all in packs. Like, crayons and pencils in the pencil boxes, sorted by class so that the entire box of supplies was ready to go for each classroom. We had teachers literally crying because they'd never had all their kids have all the supplies, let alone on the first day of school. We planned to do that again for next year. \n\nWhy am I mentioning this? Because I live in Seattle and have been watching the port/supply chain situation. Something I've seen mentioned several times is that this is the time of year when stuff like school supplies are ordered by large companies in anticipation of the coming fall. If you want or need school supplies, now it's probably the best time to get them because they might not be as available in autumn.\n\nIf you have an in with anyone at your local schools, if you're part of a PTA, if you're a teacher, etc., you might want to get others thinking about this as well. Especially if you are in a high poverty area, organizing in this way to ensure all the kids have necessary supplies is an amazing way to help your community. It takes a weight off the minds of both teachers and parents and ensures equity among students. Plus, you can often find deals for buying in bulk that individuals can't get.\n\nI was also considering trying to organize a school \"rummage sale\", but free. Help pass along clothes, shoes, toys, books, etc., to families who need them.", "image": { "$type": "blob", "ref": { "$link": "bafkreib3gwpf5jmudw4542uwr2qb6ua5lq7uzzso7l6lpu6b6727kwfrxi" }, "mimeType": "image/jpeg", "size": 873364 }, "aspectRatio": { "width": 989, "height": 562 } } ] }, "langs": [ "en" ], "createdAt": "2025-05-03T21:59:05.334Z" } }
