In the figure on the left is the lymph vessel network that drains off germs. On the right are regions rich in defence cells: bone marrow, abdominal organs, lymph nodes and the thymus. This gland is large in childhood (yellow), when it supplies special cells (white arrow) and a hormone (blue arrow) that later stimulates the cells to defensive action. In adult life, the thymus contracts (red).\n\nNEWFOUND CAUSE OF FEVER\n\nBarry Wood (opposite) of Johns Hopkins University, Md., has shown that infectious fevers start when phagocytes-the white blood cells with the stringy black nuclei-engulf bac-teria (purple and grey). Phagocytes secrete a chemical (red drops) that enters lymph vessels (yellow, far right). The chemical resets the brain thermostat (pale pink, far right) to raise the body temperature, an action that can be offset by aspirin (the white molecular symbol).",
