Yes, non-discretionary goods (inelastic demand) prices could rise. But increasing taxes reduces aggregate demand, so there should be deflationary pressure on non-discretionary goods. I’m not a fan of the tariffs b/c they are a regressive tax, yet tariffs aren’t inherently inflationary.
