much as i loved TLJ, it repeats this pattern more than it doesn't, rejecting the plot relevance of rey's parentage, snoke as a villain, etc. in each case it is (imo) a better film for it, but it is still a refusal to play those cards. the exception is its portrayal of luke, which people hated anyway
