It would look something like this: Foo arr[10]; ResultArray res = { .items = arr, .cap = 10 }; get_items(&res); So get_items() would fill up to cap, and if there's grow, it would try to grow the buffer, else stop. Having sat on this for a while, I think it's a bit too complicated.
