Yes, though it's never not been an issue, and it comes and goes in cycles. The inciting incident of the second act of "Field of Dreams" (1989) is lunatic conservatives at a PTA meeting trying to ban a book! We just see the poison at the grassroots seeping out and up in a more comprehensive fashion.
