Before the internet there was very little nationwide news coverage. CNN when they formed suddenly had to fill 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Before them, you had 30 mins weekdays, and a couple hours on Sunday. This is why you hear about these things now. Even though the crime rates are way down.
