If you want to know what all this hoo-hah with the Australian Govt's carbon neutral certification scheme is, this paper I wrote might be useful. It also features recommendations for genuinely reforming the scheme. #auspol #climate @australiainstitute.org.au australiainstitute.org.au/report/submi...

"alt": "excerpt from submission to Climate Active program direction consultation\nCLIMATE ACTIVE: AUSTRALIA’S COLLECTIVE INACTION\nHeadline question: What value is provided to businesses and organisations, consumers and the\nclimate by the Australian Government operating a program to certify voluntary climate action?\nThere is no evidence that self-regulation and/or voluntary environmental certification schemes result in\nbetter outcomes for the environment or consumers. In fact, the opposite is often true, with these initiatives\nfacilitating misleading claims by the private sector.1 2\nThere is also the risk that voluntary schemes weaken the argument for government regulation and\nmandatory standards for emissions disclosure and management. This is particularly worrying when\nvoluntary commitments are being encouraged by the government itself, as is the case in Australia. Climate\nActive appears to be an attempt by the Australian Government to avoid holding the private sector to\naccount, rather than a complementary measure to robust regulation.\nTo date, Climate Active has played a significant role facilitating greenwash in Australia by promoting fossil\nfuel companies and large polluters as ‘climate active’ and neglecting to ensure the veracity of carbon\noffsets being bought by its members. This is even after numerous independent investigations have found\nthem to be fraudulent.\n3 Climate Active has undermined the credibility of its own brand and undermined\nconsumer confidence. The scheme has diminished the credibility of its members who have acted in good\nfaith, both by failing to ensure robust claims, and a willingness to certify businesses who clearly are not\n‘climate active’.\nThe Climate Active ‘Carbon Neutral’ trademark does not appear to have ever been registered. This brings\nthe historical carbon neutral claims of all its members into question, even before the legitimacy of\nindividual claims are examined.\n",
