Of these, all but one hail from the progressive side of politics. This serves to balance out the conservative appointments made under the previous Coalition government.\nA closer examination reveals that this 'balance' is highly selective. 14 of these new appointees have a union background which is great. However, EVERY ONE of them comes from a union affiliated with the Australian Labor Party, even though 42% of union members belong to non-affiliated unions. Such a clear pattern of exclusion raises concerns about fairness, representation, and the integrity of the appointment process.\nThe lack of appointees from non-affiliated unions means that a significant portion of the union movement-and by extension, the workforce-has no direct voice on the FWC. The result is an unfair advantage for unions closely tied to the Labor Party and a marginalisation of those that operate more independently of it. This creates an FWC that is less representative of the broader union landscape and, therefore, less able to fairly arbitrate on industrial matters that impact all workers, not just those aligned with Labor-affiliated unions.",

Its members are tasked with making decisions that affect wages, workplace conditions, and industrial disputes. By stacking the FWC with individuals from a narrow band of the union spectrum, the government is ensuring that certain ideological perspectives dominate while others are shut out.\nThe appointment process itself further highlights the problem. A formal job application process was established, however, the process was little more than a facade. I know of several highly qualified candidates from non-affiliated unions who applied. I also naively applied. The outcome suggests that our applications were never given any consideration. The government's main objective was not to find the most qualified and diverse progressive candidates but to maintain control over the ideological makeup of the FWC.\nThe consequence of this approach is a further erosion of public trust in government institutions. Workers in non-affiliated unions, who make up a substantial proportion of the workforce, deserve fair representation in decisions that directly affect them. It is not fair to officials working for the NTEU (National Tertiary Education Union), ASMOF, Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation, Australian Education Union and the lEUA (to name a few) to be shut out.\nFairness in industrial relations requires genuine balance, not just partisan counterbalancing. The government must recognise that unions not affiliated with Labor should be represented accordingly. Anything less is a disservice to the principles of fairness and impartiality that the FWC is supposed to represent.",
