Habeas corpus—"present the body"—is a body of law against illegal imprisonment. In Western tradition, it was ~ codified by the Magna Carta, following the uprising against King John (of Robin Hood fame). It gradually became more inclusive and fulsome, there and then in US. It is fucking bedrock law.
