I'd argue that First-Past-the-Post fails to hold parties to maintain moderate positions. The fall of Progressive Conservatism in Canada and the rise of Trump in the US are examples. By breaking up big parties into smaller ones, coalitions have the option to exclude factions they deem unacceptable.
