From Latin 'gentilis', of a family, clan, nation. It was used to translate Greek 'ethnikos' (nations), which was used to translate Hebrew 'goyim', (peoples, nations). English 'genteel' comes from the French 'gentil', which ultimately derives from the same Latin roots. Divergent evolution.
