another option: use 12bit float-like numbers (only positive sign and exponent). You'd lose precision for big numbers, but you can still keep track approx. by e.g. having a one in ten chance of increasing a "4.69k" to a "4.70k" and a one in a million chance of increasing a "624M" to a "625M"
