          "alt": "Main text from above:\n\nLSD: Visions and Ghastly Danger\n\nOne of the most talked about drugs of recent years, LSD (technically lysergic acid diethylamide), has fascinated scientists not only because of its tremendous potency-1/300,000 of an ounce can produce a trance in which a man may dance with his own shadow (opposite) but also be-cause its action offers clues to nerve-cell chemistry. The LSD molecule contains an important section that closely resembles a major part of the molecule of a chemical called serotonin. Serotonin may be one of the brain chemicals that transfer signals from an axon tip across the synapse to another nerve cell. The similarity between LSD and serotonin may explain LSD's power.\n\nAccording to one theory, an LSD molecule can fool a nerve cell into accepting it as a signal-carrying sero-tonin molecule. But LSD cannot forward impulses the way serotonin does, so signals are altered. Thus, the drug may both increase the number of signals, amplifying sensations, and also distort the signals so that the sensations received are exaggerated beyond ordinary experience.\n\nThe visual effects of a dose of LSD are extraordinary. Colours brighten and glow, and familiar objects may seem wondrously beautiful. But the drug can also make a user writhe on the floor, terrorized by grisly visions, or imagine himself so indestructible that he walks into a moving car.\n\nSome of the psychic disturbances that are induced by LSD resemble schizophrenia, which is a severe mental illness. These effects are known to have led to permanent damage and insanity. Recognizing \"the grave danger... to both the individual and to society\" of the non-scientific and non-medical administration of LSD, a United Nations commission on narcotics recently condemned \"the usage of such drugs\".",
