Museo Castelli\n\nX12207\n\nThis fragment of an almost life-sized crucifix is the only surviving piece of wooden sculpture by Lando di Pietro, a renowned Sienese goldsmith and architect. It demonstrates the extraordinary refinement of his technique in the sensitivity of the modelling and painting of Christ's face.\n\nThe crucifix was probably made for a Dominican confraternity in Siena. In the 18th century it was transferred to a church just outside the city. The building and sculpture were severely damaged by Allied bombing during the Second World War.\n\nLando's handwritten prayers were discovered concealed inside the head and knee of Christ.",
