The first appointed US Government meteorologist, James Pollard Espy, was born on May 9th, 1785. His book Philosophy of Storms (1841) proposed that air would flow toward the regions of lowest pressure and then be forced upward, causing clouds and precipitation. archive.org/details/phil...
