listening to Shirer’s “The Nightmare Years” (mostly Europe, 1930-1940) and I think I knew this but it’s still striking how the guys Hitler surrounded himself with were, like him, little freaks of no particular consequence, whose qualifications were a willingness to repeat lies and not think too hard
