#sfmt2025 39. Bō Path of the Teal Lotus (boyf played) From a glance, this should be an amazing game. Great art, difficult platforming challenges, pretty good combat too, metroidvania structure. But...even just watching it, wow, it's hard to believe how much it apes from Hollow Knight

In practice, it looks like a game that maybe could have used more playtesting to find points of frustration for people. Quite a few sections make you redo a lot if you even touch a hazard, booting you back to a more recent checkpoint. It doesn't seem like the devs were blind to this as sometimes the checkpointing is generous, but other times it's not, and sometimes a critical path to make it somewhere when backtracking requires some relatively complex platforming for something you'll need to pass through 3 or more times. Maybe this wouldn't be an annoyance for some people/players, but man, it just seems like An Issue sometimes. It's the little things and big things. You charge magic by hitting things, and cast spells/heal by using the stored magic. You pogo when hitting things below you in the air. One of the best bosses starts out with one guy, then goes to two, then three at once. It's a Metroidvania where you control a lil guy. The game is pretty darn hard at times. Whether this is a good thing or not is up to you but...I do wish it was more unique. Hollow Knight is one of my favs for quite a few reasons, but this wasn't eye catching enough for me to go ahh yeah actually I wanna try playing this too, I was content to just watch my boyf play this one. \nUnfortunately, story/characters/lore were far from making up the difference of the grievances above. The game is too long winded in dialogue, the game's more interested in throwing lore at you than easing you into the world, and it comes off as more interested in mashing together and retelling japanese mythology than doing anything more original. Not that anything is \"original\", but idk, focusing on adapting one tale's pathos, or being more focused in general rather than feeling like a \"greatest hits\" of japanese mythology for each section would have done a lot for this game.\nIt sounds like I have nothing but criticisms for this game and idk I do, but it's still not necessarily a bad game or boring - just missing focus in, well, a lot of things to go from \"good\" to \"great'.
